On July 11, the University of Tokyo announced the admissions outline for its new program, the College of Design, which will be launched in September 2027. The university will offer two distinct application pathways: one for students educated in Japan and another for those educated overseas. Admissions will be based on a comprehensive evaluation through interviews, essays, and performance on Japan’s standardized university entrance exam or internationally standardized tests designated by the University of Tokyo. Each application route will recruit 50 students.
This new program will follow an integrated five-year curriculum, with an enrollment capacity of 100 students, half of them will be international students. To accommodate the new department, the university plans to reduce intake numbers for some existing faculties.
Notably, the university will discontinue the PEAK program, which offer all-English courses, after the 2026 fall intake.
The admissions guidelines are expected to be published around August 2026, with applications opening that fall. Results will be announced between February and March 2027.
