According to the latest 2026 survey on private universities in Japan by the Promotion and Mutual Aid Corporation for Private Schools of Japan, the overall enrollment rate for 4-year private universities reached 102.7%, an increase of just over 1 percentage point from the previous year. At the same time, the percentage of universities falling under 100% capacity dropped by 7 points to 46.2% (exactly 275 universities, which is 41 fewer schools than last year).
