Number of international students by region and prefecture of Japan

When considering which university in Japan you would like to attend, you should also think about which prefecture the university is located in. While studying abroad in Japan, you will not only learn through your classes at university but also gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture through your daily life. Each prefecture in Japan has its own unique characteristics.
The table on the left shows the ranking of prefectures by the number of international students. About 35% of international students study in Tokyo, and there is a significant gap compared to Osaka, which ranks second. However, the best prefecture for studying abroad differs from person to person. In fact, studying in a region with fewer international students may allow you to build closer relationships with local people, which could even lead directly to employment opportunities after graduation.
Japan has four distinct seasons, and the appeal of each prefecture changes depending on the time of year. Some regions are rich in nature, others are famous for hot springs, some have deep historical traditions, while others are known for delicious seafood or beautiful coastlines. Each prefecture offers its own unique charm.
If you are unsure about which university or prefecture would suit you best, consider seeking advice through online counseling.
