News

Showa Women’s University (President: Akira Kanao, Setagaya Ward, Tokyo) is currently hosting the SWU Summer International Program (SSIP) on its Setagaya campus from Tuesday, June 17 to Wednesday, July 2. This experiential learning program brings together 21 international students and domestic students to learn collaboratively in English. Launched in 2013, the program is now in its 10th year, with a total of 165 students from 28 countries and regions having participated so far.

SSIP consists of two courses: Cross-Cultural Workshop and Japan Studies, both conducted entirely in English. In particular, the Cross-Cultural Workshop fosters deeper cultural understanding through multicultural group activities, while also developing intercultural communication and critical thinking skills. Students from Harvard University in the United States and Showa Women’s University also join as interns to support the program.

This year, students from 14 countries and regions—including the United States, United Kingdom, China, Vietnam, France, Canada, Lithuania, and Russia—are participating in the Cross-Cultural Workshop. Amid global uncertainty, they are tackling the theme “Exploring Japanese Culture Through Everyday Encounters”. Through fieldwork, group discussions, and a 4-day, 3-night retreat at SWU’s training facility TOMEI Gakurin, students engage in shared experiences that help them gain mutual understanding and appreciation of each other’s cultures.

On the final day, July 2, students will present their research in a poster session.

Poster Session Details Date: Wednesday, July 2, 2025 | 14:50–16:20 Location: Global Lounge, 1st Floor, Building No. 8, Showa Women’s University Content: Each group will present posters summarizing their research and analysis based on their fieldwork topics.
